Wood-burning, acrylic and copper leaf on birch panel
48" x 48"
From England to the US, women and girls were "employed", sometimes for just a penny a day, in sorting and crushing ore during copper mining. They were believed to be more suited to this job because it required dexterity and attention to detail. Their history in Michigan is told in the book 'The Women of the Copper Country' by Mary Doria Russell.
