Alexis Mixter
wood burning and acrylic on birch panel
16"x12"
The watermelon has been used as a symbol of protest in Palestine, representing the colors of the Palestinian flag, following the suppression of its display by Israel following the Six-Day War in 1967. The pink scarf is a symbol of the feminist group CODEPINK, which supports human-rights initiatives in places like Palestine, Iran, Ukraine, Cuba, and more.
The name of this piece is an Arabic word meaning “steadfastness” and represents an important cultural value of the people of Palestine.
